Biography

Leonard was born in Portland to George and Theresa Schoessler. Graduated from St. Rose Grade School and St. Stephens High School in Portland where he met his wife of 67 years, Florence Doerfler.

After graduation Leonard worked at the Roseway Theater and was in business with his father in a carpentry shop. He worked in the naval yard in Bremerton restoring the Pacific Fleet after Pearl Harbor, then joined the navy and served in the South Pacific.

He married Florence in 1944 and they had three children, Gregory, Edward and Mary Schoessler.

After the war, he worked for the Postal Service as a railway mail clerk and later in the main branch as a mail transfer clerk. He retired in 1975 and began making wooden toys which he sold and many which he gave to Toy and Joy makers. He also made stained glass and displayed many of his creations in the family cabin in Cannon Beach.

Member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, he served as Grand Knight of council 678 and Statewide Master. He was active in the cub scouts and was a cub scout master of pack 133.

He and his wife were long time parishioners at St. Ignatius Catholic Church.
